Shalom,
If you’ve been to Israel or are aware of some of the most impactful Jewish leaders and philanthropists of the 19th Century, chances are you are familiar with the name Sir Moses Montefiore.
A titan of business who achieved massive wealth and influence in Britain, Montefiore’s legendary philanthropy extended to Jews and non-Jews alike. In 1837, Queen Victoria appointed him Sheriff of London and bestowed a knighthood on him, followed later by a baronetcy.
Someone once asked Sir Moses, “What are you worth?” After thinking for a while, he named a rather large sum. The questioner was baffled. “Surely your wealth must be much more than that!”
With a smile, Sir Moses replied: “You didn’t ask me how much I ‘own’. You asked me how much I ‘am worth’. So I calculated how much I have given to Tzedakah (charity) thus far this year – because we are worth what we are willing to share with others.”
In that regard, there is no form of sharing more critical than helping people in dire straits put food on their tables, keep a roof over their heads, or pay for essential needs. This is something we at Chabad of the Conejo do – regularly and discreetly – for numerous individuals and families in our community.
You would be surprised by how many people depend on this vital support to get by. Furthermore, as many hungry and destitute people come to our doors, none are ever turned away emptyhanded.
Over the past 16 months, we have expanded, we have expanded Chabad’s “People in Need” program to provide ongoing assistance to the Israeli refugees from the southern and northern border cities and kibbutzim who have been forced to flee their homes due to the incessant attacks by Hamas and Hezbollah.
To help fund the “People in Need” program, we will once again be holding our annual Raffle Drive, culminating in a grand drawing for more than 20 wonderful prizes – including a 3-day Airbnb vacation, Dodger tickets, elegant watches and jewelry, sports memorabilia, dinners at fine kosher restaurants, works of Judaica and literature, and beautiful collectible lithographs.
On behalf of all those who stand to benefit from the raffle proceeds, we encourage you to purchase as many tickets (and secure as many chances to win) as possible. What you will get, spiritually, will be ‘worth’ far more than what you give – let alone your increased chances of winning some great prizes! Please visit ChabadConejo.com/raffle.
With gratitude and blessings of good fortune to you and yours, we remain,
Sincerely,
Rabbi Moshe Bryski
Executive Director
Rabbi Yisroel Levine
Director of Development
The Grand Drawing will be held during our Purim Festival on March 13, 2025. Winner need not be present. For further information, visit Chabadconejo.com/raffle .
